“Beurette” or “veiled woman”? Sexual fantasy or victim in need of rescue? Maghrebi women continue to denounce the racism and sexism that confine them to the image of vulgar, opportunistic women or that of submissive, discreet women.



Based on a personal reflection by director Nesrine Slaoui, this documentary sets out to meet the women affected and gives a voice to a younger generation that refuses to let others speak for them. Among them are Inès Tazi, a content creator; Shirine Boutella, an actress; and Fatima Daas, a writer—each trying, in her own way, to redefine her identity. Nesrine Slaoui does not merely stand behind the camera. She shares her own story: her childhood, the weight of others’ gazes, and the pressure to succeed in order to exist beyond the stereotypes projected onto “Maghrebi women.” These are experiences that the women she interviews also share in one way or another.
